The Legacy of Coffee: The Journey of Maicon and Sonia
Chapter 1: Forbidden Love in the Hills of Minas Gerais (1940 - 1950)
In the early 1940s, in the hills of Carmo de Minas, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, Maicon and Sonia were born into humble families who worked for a prominent landowner renowned for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. The families worked at Fazenda Santa Vitória, a renowned estate, but had been divided by rivalries for years.
Maicon, the son of the overseer, grew up helping with the harvest and selecting the best beans, learning the value of quality and hard work. Sonia, the daughter of the estate’s head cook, inherited a talent for blending flavors, creating recipes that paired perfectly with coffee.
Despite resistance from their families, their love blossomed during the challenging years of World War II, a period when Brazil contributed troops to the Allied effort and strengthened agricultural exports, such as coffee, to the United States and Europe. The tension between their families intensified as the young couple began dreaming of a future beyond the plantations.
Chapter 2: Leaving Brazil and Arriving in the United States (1955 - 1960)
After years of facing family restrictions and financial hardships during the turbulent period of Getúlio Vargas's government, Maicon and Sonia decided it was time to leave. In 1955, they took advantage of U.S. migration policies welcoming skilled agricultural workers and embarked on a journey into the unknown.
The journey was arduous. After weeks aboard a ship, they arrived at the Port of New Orleans and settled in Little Brazil, on the outskirts of Newark, New Jersey, a community that had housed Brazilian immigrants since the early 20th century.
Maicon found work as an assistant in a small coffee roasting shop, while Sonia began preparing Brazilian dishes and selling them to the community. Inspired by the quality of coffee from their homeland, they opened a coffee shop called Maison Coffee in Hoboken, a neighboring city that was thriving due to immigration and trade, in 1960.
Chapter 3: The Rise and Fall of Maison Coffee (1970 - 1980)
During the 1970s, Maison Coffee became a local gathering spot, known for offering artisanal coffee that preserved traditional roasting and brewing techniques. Each cup told the story of Maicon and Sonia, earning a loyal customer base.
However, in 1980, the U.S. economic recession brought challenges for small businesses. The crisis of high inflation and rising import costs directly impacted Maison Coffee. After years of struggling to keep the business afloat, Maicon and Sonia decided to close its doors. Nonetheless, they never abandoned their passion for coffee, continuing to roast beans at home and sell to neighbors and friends, preserving their legacy of quality.
Chapter 4: The Legacy Reborn (2025)
Decades later, in 2025, Maicon and Sonia’s grandson, Nilson Faria, decided to honor his grandparents' legacy. Inspired by the stories of courage and dedication he heard during his childhood in Seattle, Washington, where he grew up, Nilson founded Mr. Maison, an e-commerce platform that combines tradition, innovation, and a passion for coffee and tea.
Choosing Seattle was no accident: the city is a global hub for coffee lovers and home to iconic industry brands. However, Nilson wanted something different. He brought the spirit of Carmo de Minas and Little Brazil into the modern world, offering products that reflect decades of experience, love, and respect for the artisanal process.
Mr. Maison is more than just a store; it is a tribute to Maicon and Sonia and an invitation for the world to discover the flavor and story behind every coffee bean and tea leaf.
